ENGLISH
Born in conservative Apartheid South Africa, Benine du Toit was part of the younger generation confronted with the complex, harsh realities of her native country. Social, political, cultural, and ethnic differences cause high tensions, polarization and conflict. Most live in separate realities and fear of the other, something that is increasingly happening in the rest of the world and the Netherlands. Benine explores emotional experiences, both personal and collectively, through everyday incidences of these trying themes surrounding South Africa, the use of mediums, how it relates to- and what it evokes in the viewer. She uses scenes and photos from police archives and media platforms, fragments of reality. Working with charcoal, paint and relief printing, the rawness, roughness, and expressiveness of the combined mediums are unpredictable and provocative.
NEDERLANDS
LAND OF PLANTY SERIES
The Land of Plenty series depicts moments of chaos during public interplay of conflict and discord in South Africa. The feeling of tension, fear and discomfort becomes evident. Due to the partial abstractions and cropping of the scenes, the overview disappears, and it is not immediately clear what is going on. This prompts the viewer to take a closer look, to explore the expression and inter-relations therein. The commotion, powerlessness and sentiment is uncomfortable and recognizable for many today.
CROWDED SERIES
In contradiction to classic portraiture of primarily memorializing the rich and powerful, these portraits are of suspects and victims of the attacks on farms in South Africa. The criminal and the casualty, those who become mere statistics of unjust and instigated conflicts. The confrontation between the work and the viewer invites apprehension and perhaps even commiseration, as the roles of the suspects and victims become equivocal in the totality of the series.
